Genetics, Research and Clinical Trials

Genetics Program

Spectrum Health's cancer genetics program was the first in the region and is the only program in West Michigan led by a fellowship-trained clinical geneticist. In addition, a team of genetic counselors works individually with each patient to assess and reduce cancer risk and explore early detection, prevention and research opportunities.

Personalized Medicine

The future of cancer treatment is personalized medicine—custom-designed treatment solutions to meet a patient’s specific genetic makeup and situation. Spectrum Health Cancer Center is at the forefront with next-generation technology that allows for rapid genetic sequencing of your cancer genes using a small tumor sample.

National Clinical Trials

Cancer patients may be eligible to take part in a national clinical trial at Spectrum Health through the Cancer Research Consortium of West Michigan, which is endorsed by the National Cancer Institute. An on-site research nurse assists patients with the process—from screening and eligibility, to providing information and educating patients, to helping patients decide if a clinical trial is right for them.
