Every few months, a new study pops up about the negative effects sitting can have on our bodies and our health.
The American Heart Association has already warned that too much sedentary time—at home or at work—increases our risk of heart disease and diabetes.
A sedentary lifestyle could increase the likelihood of experiencing many different health troubles, including cardiovascular problems, musculoskeletal disorders and cognitive impairment, according to a recent study.
But what about recliners, those easy chairs that encourage folks to kick their feet up? Don’t they take stress off the back and relieve lower back pain? Doesn’t a recliner simply provide a great way to relax without worry?
Maybe, and maybe not.
So says Bryan Kamps, MD, a Spectrum Health Medical Group orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee and hip replacements.
“It’s kind of a mixed bag,” Dr. Kamps said. “I wouldn’t say that recliners are just bad for everything. There are some things that they’re good for, but you have to use your judgment.”
When it’s good
Recliners are especially helpful for people recovering from surgery, Dr. Kamps said.
A patient who had shoulder surgery, for example, may feel less pain while relaxing in a recliner because the chair keeps the shoulder elevated.
Recliners are also good for people who spend a lot of time on their feet. Excessive standing puts stress on the back.
“If you take some stress off of your back, whether it’s by lying flat or lying in a recliner, that can help relieve some of that back pain,” the doctor said.
But—and this is important—the recliner has to fit you properly.
If your recliner doesn’t support your lower back, the chair could do your body more harm than good. To help your posture, add support by tucking a rolled towel or a small cushion against your lower back, Dr. Kamps said.
If you’re buying a new recliner, pay attention to what you feel at your lower back as you try out the options.
“If there’s nothing there, it’s probably going to make your back pain worse,” he said. “Or if you don’t have back pain, it’s going to give you back pain.”
When it’s bad
Recliners have their benefits, but they’re simply not helpful for people who tend to sit too much.
“A recliner in front of the television with a remote, spending hours a day in it—that is not going to be good for your health, right?” the doctor said. “That’s not the recliner’s fault, though. That’s just overall sedentary lifestyle.”
The recliner’s flaw is that it encourages sitting. And some people just don’t need that kind of encouragement.
What they need instead is to increase their activity level and improve their diet, Dr. Kamps said.
“Over and over again, every day, I tell people, ‘You know, I can do your surgery, but it’s not going to fix the reason that you got this joint pain in the first place,’” he said, alluding to lifestyle choices that affect body mass index and overall health.
Too much sitting is the problem, he said, which remains true no matter what type of chair you’re in.
“Our bodies aren’t designed to just sit,” Dr. Kamps said.
So go ahead, kick back and relax. Just remember that it should be a short and cherished interlude between activities.
I agree that the recliner has to fit you right. It can be a good way to support yourself when sitting, if you use it in good measure. I think it’s important to be sure to try out a few models to see what fits your needs best.
I use to sleep in recliner due to back pain, but my new recliner has caused chronic shoulder pain!
I think years of sitting in mine has not only ruined my shoulders but now I have shooting pain in the biceps. Must be nerve affected. The chair rolls my shoulders forward because not super wide at the top. No neck pain though . Strange. I am going to try acupuncture.
I am an old retired man who lifted weights and blamed my shoulder pain on that. Now not sure.
I agree I never had back pain but trouble with my legs. it’s got worse
Some one bought mine I was grateful but
It’s cause more pain due to wrong size
Easy to get in and out Off
But not all that Comfortable after a while
I have horrible pains in my upper abdomen on my upper body Benz. I don’t know if that’s from the recliner or not but I’ve been sleeping in it for several years because it’s the most comfortable thing I can do for my bed back.
Hey Stan I hope you are well. Stretch your chest and biceps by sitting on a bench or chair that allows you to grab hold of a pole just behind you are arms length. make sure your palms are facing down. Stretch for as long as you can hold it up to a maximum time of 2 minutes. Repeat as many times as needed as long as it does not cause further pain. This really works.
Please send this information to my niece. You did not have anywhere I could e mail her
Hi Rita – I just sent you an email with a PDF of the article attached as well as the link. You should be able to forward it on to her. Thank you again for being a Health Beat reader! Cheers, Cheryl 🙂
I had back surgery 7 years ago and for the longest time i had lumbar back support everywhere I would sit. I find my upper legs and hips to be a problem now with our reclining couch. Thank you for the reminder to have lumbar support even now. I do force myself to not use the recliner all the time (so easy to kick back recliner).
We all need reminders from time to time, BJ! Hope you’re doing well. 🙂
I have a super oversized recliner.
I have been having back pain and shoulder pain. I bought a firm pillow and it helped a little. Thinking of getting rid of it and getting something that supports my back better.
That may be a good idea, Alma! Those recliners sure are comfortable in the short-term, but they can cause some issues if you sit in them much at all. Best wishes to you!
We bought a couch n loveseat with reclining seats about a year ago. I sit with my feet elevated and it works wonders on my neuropathy and swelling in my lower extremities. However, due to sitting on the right side of the couch only I developed a severe pain in my right shoulder. I didn’t notice that I was leaning against the arm rest causing pressure on my shoulder. I started sitting on different sides of the couch and my right shoulder pain eventually resolved with some exercises. Unfortunately I’m now having problems with my right lower back. I have DJD and had an epidural injection which didn’t help at all. I finally figured it out myself that the darn RECLINER COUCH has caused a lumbar strain. I’ve been taking Advil to help reduce swelling and message therapy has done wonders. The best treatment is STAY OUT of the RECLINER COUCH!!! I now only sit for short periods of time. No more falling asleep in the recliner. Hope this helps someone. 😉
So glad you were able to determine the cause of your lumbar strain and you’re on the mend, Regina! Thank you for sharing your experience. 🙂
I have had the exact same experience. Your experience has confirmed what I need to do. Thank you for sharing.
I don’t often comment on websites I’m not too familiar with, but I think this might help somebody. I stayed with my dad for a year and a half when he was sick. His couch had recliner features. Every night we would sit and watch tv. I would have a few beers in the fridge and over the course of the night get up to get them. I wouldn’t lower the leg rest that was up at the time. Instead I stepped off with my right leg and twisted off to the right towards the kitchen. Man, my right hip is really bad now; over a year later.
Please watch out for this.
I been sleeping in a rocking chair for the past month and a hald. Due to surgery. Now I have this lump on the back of my neck. It feels like my spinal bone. But I’m not sure. Now I’m scared that something is dislocated or something. My mom’s says it’s inflammation there in my neck. Looks like I became hunch back by my neck over night. Can you help me to understand
Hi Honesty, We recommend you discuss your concerns with your primary care provider and get suggestions from him/her as to how you may improve your posture. They’ll be the best people to help. Best wishes to you!
I tripped over three weeks ago, hit a chair with my left chest on the way down, bruising my left ribs and hurting my right hand. Xrays were negative for any fractures, in spite of some osteoporosis. About a week before that I was sitting outside on concrete moving rocks and twisted to my right as I pushed a big rock, and hurt my left hip. That seemed to resolve without issue. After the fall I was advised to sleep in the recliner to help the rib pain. Now I’m pretty much incapacitated with the hip and leg pain from sleeping in the recliner because of the ribs. I can barely walk on the left leg because it hurts from my left buttocks down the outside of my leg, to the ankle. The leg hurts worse than the ribs. Can’t take narcotics. They make me nauseous and too sleepy. Can’t take Advil anymore because it raised my blood pressure. So it’s aspirin alternating with Tylenol. Plus Skelaxin and heat. I’m trying to get away from the recliner. Was sleeping half the night there and moving to the bed for the last couple of nights. Not sure what else I can do. I’m 68 and my hubby is doing his best to help me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Hello, Su, and so sorry to hear about your troubles. That sounds awful. We highly recommend you discuss this with your primary care provider, who may be able to offer you the best personalized solutions to get you back to enjoying life. Best wishes to you!
I have had two back surgeries and need another one so now I have to sleep in recliner now for about 7 months. I’ve noticed my ham strings hurt and legs are soar I am having trouble walking because of legs hurting can’t hardly walk first six or seven steps. I was wondering if this could be from sleeping in recliner?
Hi Rebecca, It’s difficult to say how much sleeping in a recliner contributed to your maladies, but the doctor quoted in this article suggests that recliners that don’t have good lower back support may be harmful. We suggest you discuss your concerns with your orthopedic physician and/or physical therapist. They should be able to provide you with a personalized care plan. Best wishes to you!
Why is my new Lazy Boy power recliner so hard to sit on
If you find out, let me know- I have the same problem
Me too. Bought a lazy boy 3 years ago. Too hard. Bought a more expensive one this week ($1200) same problem. What’s with this?
Lazy boys have reduced and downgraded their foam and padding. I used to be fine in them now 20 min. In a new one and I feel the springs.
I also have a lazy boy with recliner on the left and right side I’ve had nothing but aches and pains neck problems shoulder problems arm problems all because of this La-Z-Boy sofa behind my knees they are hurting when I get up because the sofa cuts into the back of my knees I can feel the coils inside the La-Z-Boy. The neck rest comes out way too far that’s why I know I’m having neck and shoulder problems.. for such an expensive sofa it is damaging to the bone structure and I am getting rid of it I’m done with lazy boy not worth the money and not worth the pain.
Hoping for advice,,,
I had a traumatic spinal injury in 2009. I had a fusion, but wound up with “failed back surgery”. I was in the fetal position in a bed for almost 5 years before I went to the Mayo, they extended the fusion and performed a PSO. I was able to walk again, not much, but it gave me my life back. BC I can’t walk more than 10 feet without falling, I use a wheelchair. When I’m at home, I’m in my recliner. (Much better than bedroom living!!!!!!).
But now, I’ve noticed that the longer I’m in my recliner the less I can move. I’ve been told ligaments in my hips have shrunk. when I stand, I’m bent over at the hips. I can straighten, but only temporarily and it snaps back. Please, I’m desperate for advice on how to fix this. Lately my hips feel like I can’t even walk the 10-45 feet I made it up to in physical therapy. They feel weak and like they’re going to ‘give’.
I’ve tried stretching, consciously straightening when I walk (with an cane)… but it’s getting worse.
Do you have ANY suggestions. At all?
I was really excited to get a new recliner. I ordered one online, which did not allow me the chance to try it out, but it had great reviews and several comments about having good lumbar support and helping with back pain. Well, I get the recliner, and it initially feels comfortable sitting in it. But even after sitting in it an hour or two (whether reclined or not) I have started having pain in my lower back. To me, it seems to have too much support in the lumbar area, making me feel like it is pushing my lower back forward. Most everything I read about recliners and lower back pain says that they need to have good lumbar support. I guess that they can also have too much lumbar support? I keep hoping that my back will adapt to the recliner, but each day I use it I have the pain.
The same thing happened to me! I got a La-Z-Boy Joshua style recliner and it’s surely comfortable but the lumbar cushion seems to push too far into my back. I’m hoping either I will get used to it, or the lumbar support will ease up as the recliner breaks in? It’s hard to return the stuff online – wayfair will probably want me to pay $100 in shipping – so if it doesn’t get better I might even consider surgery on the chair!
I had a bad hip and sleeping in a recliner alleviated the pain. I had hip surgery and now my hip is great but I can’t sleep in the bed anymore without it causing a lot of lower back pain. Any ideas for why this is happening? How can I get back to sleeping in the bad?
I would suggest putting towels and/or pillows between your mattress and box springs under your head and knees. I did this and it changed my life. I have since purchased an adjustable base. I can say, it’s worth the money because you can sleep again and not wake up with pain.
I suggested the towels and pillows method because if you don’t feel relief, you might as well not purchase the adjustable base for your mattress.
I have had my recliner for a few years. I have had a tendency to spend too much time in it over the past years. So now I have developed painful neuropathy in my feet and part of my calves. Seems I have had this neuropathy starting when I got the chair. When I sit in it with the feet elevated, there is pressure on the back of my ankles. Now I am wondering if the neuropathy is caused by the pressure on the back of the ankles. What do you think?
I have an HSL dual recliner. I am disabled and spend a lot of time sitting. I have a bad neck, my head seems too heavy for it. Could it be the chair causing this problem? The chair back is in two parts and is causing discomfort. I am currently used a stationary Parker Knowle and my neck seems better. Can it be the chair?
So I am disabled and have to sit in a recliner when I am not sleeping in my bed. I can barely walk, but use a walker in the house. What do you suggest for someone who HAS to sit in a recliner all day? I can’t sit with my feet down, my feet have to be elevated. I go for long periods where I am fine, but when my back goes out I can barely stand or use the toilet or do anything at all. The pain is so excruciating and nothing can be done to alleviate it.
I have discovered after sitting in my lazyboy for a couple hours (the approximate length of a movie or a couple evening tv shows) I begin to have sciatic pain in my right leg and hip. Sometimes, if I’ve been sitting longer, it gets unbearable. Is it my chair? What should I do — besides getting up and walking around every hour or so? Maybe my chairs’ lumbar is worn out. I read in a previous comment that I should try a rolled up towel. I’m going to try that.
I have all reclineing furniture. Got it in May from Room’s To Go. Im having terrible shoulder and neck pain since getting it. Im 83 years old have a 5 year contract with them. I just can’t spend 5 years in this pain.Help!
I bought a new leather Havertys recliner, but everytine I sit in it, in any Position I get this awful neck pain and headache. It seems useless to me now. Wish I could return it.
I have a recliner but I am not able to use the reclining feature. We have a couple of ragdoll house cats that we love a lot more than that recliner. We are afraid one could get under the recliner and get seriously hurt as the recliner is being closed. So I have to put a footstool in front of the recliner to raise my legs. I am 60 years old and rather sedentary. Since covid I have gone out even less than before. So now I have developed hemorrhoids from sitting in my chair so much. Never had a hemorrhoid before. Miserable! Quite painful. I’m wondering if reclining would be less likely to cause hemorrhoids. But even if it does, it still leaves me what’s the problem of the cats..
Lower back pain
I have really bad lower back and hip pain while I’m in my bed I toss and turn a night. I have a recliner sofa which I sit on every night reclined for about 3-4hours could this be causing me the pain when I go to my bed? I am only 50 and been suffering with this for past couple of years. Tried all types of pillows etc in bed but nothing helps.
Is it possible to injury the hamstrings by trying to lower a stiff recliner footrest? I have suddenly developed severe posterior knee pain, as well as very tight painful posterior calf and thigh muscles. I can think of nothing else I could have done to injure myself. My right knee has caused me intermittent mild pain, but now it’s both knees, and severe. (Of course, when I saw my doctor last week for my regular checkup, the pain was much less, but the next day, roared back.)
Hi Cindy! Wow! Could have written your comment myself! Having same exact issues and the only change I had made was sitting in my recliner for an hour to hour and a half while icing my knees and feet. Then suddenly remembered years back having same problem with very tight thighs and my knees killing me. Quit the recliner and all pain went away.
Hope it works for you to!!
I have recently been experiencing pain in my upper back near my left shoulder blade. Feels like I pulled something. I have a hunch that it may be related to lifting /lowering footrest on my almost new recliner that I got. ( I have to lean over to my right to grab the lever, and it sticks and is difficult at times and straining) Seems like the pain started around the time I bought it. However I could’ve pulled a muscle while working/ lifting around the house. Never had this type of pain though. (I have to get in and out of bed carefully and it hurts to lift my arm past a certain point)Then my daughter started complaining of the same pain in the same spot around the same time. Then I remembered she had sat in the chair and had also had a hard time lowering the footrest. Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated. Thank you
I’m awaiting a hip replacement as my bladder has to heal first and my recliner is about the only remotely comfortable area I have to still get up to a walker to a wheelchair, but my lower back and back takes a tole! A night ago I must had fallen asleep with my head down, when I woke up it was like a spinal bone pain. Any help in this few month time frame would be great. Thanks
I have Plantar Fascitis on both feet. Could pushing back with heels on a recliner cause foot pain?
Several years ago I was in a car accident that hurt my back. I have never completely recovered and my husband decided he would buy an expensive mattress to see if that helped. It was temperpedic and he thought it was great. I am over weight and my hips and back are worse since sleeping on it. I started sleeping on a recliner most of the night. It’s an old recliner that we got used and it is so comfortable! It has good back support and head support for my neck. I don’t recline all the way back I just put my feet up and the chair goes back just enough. I don’t know what I will do when this chair wears out because I have sat in plenty that don’t fit me and support me like this one does. It’s hard to find the perfect recliner that fits a certain person but it’s so worth it!
I feel terrible if I sit on them too long. Feel jittery after getting up.
